Learn to drive

Getting Started

Before you can learn to drive a car, you have to be at least 17 years old, and hold a provisional driving licence. To apply for a provisional licence, you must complete two forms, (D1, and D750) which are available at your local post office. We suggest that you send off for your licence in good time, (allow about 3 weeks) so that you are not delayed once you have made the decision to get started. You must NOT drive until you have one.

Your Eyesight

You must be able to read a car number plate from a distance of at least 20.5 meters, or about 67 feet. If you wear glasses or contact lenses to be able to do this, you must use them when driving. If you have any doubts, have your eyes tested.

Once you can meet the above requirements, you are ready to start your training.

Theory and Practical Tests

To be able to drive a car on your own, you have to pass two tests:

You have to pass the Theory Test before you can apply for the Practical Test.

Theory and Practice

Some people choose to take the Theory test before starting their practical in-car driving lessons. This is one way to proceed, but our experience has shown that you will gain a better feel for, and understanding of the Theory if you have some practical in-car lessons before taking the Theory test - the Theory will mean much more to you. In addition, the Theory will give you a better understanding of the driving skills that you will be using. In other words, you will get the greatest benefit from your lessons by combining Theory and Practice.
