Qualifications and exams

To qualify as a Department of Transport Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) you have to pass three examinations, simply known as Parts One, Two and Three.

PART THREE Test of Instructional Ability

This is again a practical examination, conducted in the car, and is designed to test your ability to instruct. It lasts for one hour, with the examiner playing the role of a pupil. The examiner will choose two subjects from the following list of twelve as the basis of the instruction you will give.

Candidates will be given approximately 30 minutes for each of the two exercises, and the instruction given must be adjusted to suit both the time available, and the standard of pupil that the examiner is playing.

Preparation for Part Three

Although all parts of the training course are essential and build upon each other, this is where you will be taught the theory and practice of instructing in detail.

IT IS THEREFORE THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE ENTIRE COURSE.

This part of the course consists of 2 days in the classroom, and 6 days of in-car training spent with your Staff Instructor.

A Part Three training manual is also supplied, along with the usual telephone support.

This is the most enjoyable and demanding part of the training course.

We finish with one further business day, where all aspects of running a business as a driving instructor are considered, including marketing, book keeping, taxation, and pupil & vehicle management.
