To qualify as a Department of Transport Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) you have to pass three examinations, simply known as Parts One, Two and Three.

PART ONE Theory Test

This two-part examination consists of a computer based multiple-choice test and a video based hazard perception test. The multiple-choice test has 100 questions, designed to examine your theoretical understanding of the Highway Code, driving technique, teaching methods and general motoring knowledge. Candidates are allowed 90 minutes to complete the test. Following this, the hazard perception test consists of 14 video clips, each lasting one minute. You gain marks by identifying hazards as soon as they are noticed, the earlier you do so, the higher the score, with a maximum mark of 5 on each of the hazards. These tests are held on a daily basis at local centres around the country.

The good driver will respond promptly to the courtesy of another road user and:

  1. flash headlights as a gesture of acknowledgement
  2. set a good example to others
  3. show disapproval of the incompetence or bad manners of other road users
  4. do nothing

Preparation for Part One

The Part One course material you will be supplied with consists of a set of six home study manuals including numerous mock tests. It also includes all the relevant books that you will need for the entire course. We estimate that it will take you approximately six to eight weeks of regular study to complete the course for Part One.

You will also be required to attend two days of lectures, where you will also be able to obtain help with any area of your study. Mock Part One tests are also incorporated during these two days. Unlimited telephone support is also included.
